I am happy to recommend Mrs. Elizabeth Speakman-Watt for White Pine County School District Teacher of the Month for January 2020.

Liz graduated from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. She began working at White Pine Middle School in 1998 and currently teaches 8th Grade Humanities. Liz is the WPMS Student Council Advisor as well as the Leadership instructor.  Liz does not shy away from contributing to the school community as evidenced by her work as a teacher leader and teacher mentor for new staff.  And amidst all of these professional roles, Liz rarely misses an opportunity to support her daughters in their activities, hit the slopes when there is snow, and assist her husband in their Alaskan fishing business.

Liz is known for her focus on high expectations for all students. Those expectations are clear and adhered to in her classroom at all times.  Liz is highly structured, which is craved by middle school students, although they would not admit it. Her instruction is very explicit and she never hesitates to give assistance to her students when needed in the classroom.  Over the course of a school year, she is adept at improving the overall writing of her students by supporting them in their efforts to make a claim, support with evidence and to evaluate their work with sound reasoning.

Liz’s work to raise the achievement results of her students extends to the work she does on a daily basis with her colleagues during teacher collaboration. She takes a leadership role in her grade level as well as her content area in using student data to plan for and adjust instruction within the Humanities Department.  Liz has long been a valued member of the WPMS leadership team offering insights on how we can continually push students to achieve more than they believe possible. She carries the torch with her teaching colleagues to provide a world class education across all content areas.

Liz is a highly valued member of the WPMS community.  She connects easily with students, parents and staff members allowing her to be a respected confidante and resource for all stakeholders.  Liz does not settle for just enough and lives by the idea that “average is over.” She pushes both her students and herself to be the best possible version of themselves in terms of education.  Liz embodies our district vision of providing a world class education.

We are incredibly lucky to have Liz on our staff and are grateful for the example that she continues to be a White Pine Middle School.  Congratulations Liz!!
