This award nomination is for Lisa Harris, Lund paraprofessional.  Lisa can be described as a soft-spoken woman, with a fountain of wisdom and drive to succeed inside.  She is very talented as an artist, musician and teacher.  Students love to attend her classes because she provides hands on experience, collaborative work, and team building experiences.

Lisa Harris is more than an outstanding support staff.  Like many other support staff at Lund, she has taken on the responsibility of providing classes so the students have a live teacher, rather than doing all their learning through the computer.  Lisa, along with her other duties, teaches music and social studies to middle school students.  At the beginning of the year, Lisa came to me with the idea of purchasing ukuleles for her music class.  Now, every morning I hear the students tuning and practicing on the ukes.  Students were able to perform at the Elementary Christmas plays this year.

Music not only provides a tool for students to cope with a stressful environment but according to the New England Board of Higher Education Journal, it provides improved memory, strengthened hand-eye coordination, powerful study habits, teamwork, and heightened mental processing and problem-solving.  These are all skills that students need to be successful in a 21st century career, and to be prepared for college and beyond. This truly exemplifies providing students with “world class learning” and “changing the world.”  Lisa recognized the need and advocated for her students to receive these benefits.

Lisa cheers on her students to greater learning heights, she cheers on her colleagues by pioneering new classes, she cheers on the school leadership by showing that paraprofessionals are more than just aides.  Lisa is an invaluable resource to pushing forward the vision of the school and mission of the district to provide “world class learning.”
