Steptoe Valley High School (SVHS) is White Pine County School District’s alternative high school program. White Pine High School (WPHS) is the District’s primary comprehensive high school. SVHS provides a smaller, individualized learning environment designed primarily to support students who are credit-deficient and need an alternative pathway to complete their graduation requirements successfully.
Enrollment & Priority
Due to limited staffing, space, instructional resources, equipment, and specialized support, SVHS enrollment is limited, and placement is not guaranteed. Priority for available placements is generally given in the following order:
Seniors currently enrolled at SVHS who successfully attended during their junior year and continue to meet program expectations.
Juniors currently enrolled at SVHS from the previous school year who continue to meet program expectations.
Other juniors who meet the criteria and may benefit from the alternative setting.
Sophomores and freshmen may be considered under specific circumstances following an individual review.
When SVHS reaches capacity, eligible students will be placed on a wait list. Students who meet the placement criteria will be considered in order based on the priorities above and their position on the wait list as openings become available. Placement on the wait list does not guarantee enrollment.
Placement Process
Placement at SVHS is a collaborative decision. WPHS and SVHS administrators and staff will meet and/or consult with the student and parent/guardian to review academic progress, credit status, attendance, behavior, individual needs, and available program capacity before a placement decision is made.
Students approved for SVHS will begin with a three-week probationary period and are expected to:
Attend school every scheduled day and participate in person.
Arrive at school and class on time.
Remain current with assignments and coursework.
Maintain passing grades and make appropriate progress toward earning credits.
Follow all school and District behavior expectations.
At the end of the three weeks, SVHS staff will meet with the student and parent/guardian to review progress and determine whether continued enrollment at SVHS is appropriate.
Students and parents/guardians are expected to follow the SVHS Student/Parent Contract throughout enrollment. If a student accumulates four or more violations involving attendance, behavior, academic progress, passing grades, assignment completion, or other contract expectations, a meeting will be held to review the student’s placement and discuss other educational options, if necessary.
Our Purpose
SVHS exists to help students who need an alternative educational setting successfully recover credits, meet graduation requirements, and work toward earning their high school diploma. Placement is not automatic or guaranteed and is based on student need, program capacity, available resources, and the student’s ability to meet SVHS expectations.
